New Festival Event: Kids Pop-up Park
For the first time this year, the Athens Pop-up Park will join the Forest Heights Blueberry Festival, hosted by Forest Heights Baptist Church and adjacent to the grassy softball field where so many of us already go to play.
The Pop-up Park is run by Athens-Clarke County Leisure Services and is full of games, toys, and arts-and-crafts that ACC staff will make available in response to the interests of kids who show up. We’ve been told they have everything from hula-hoops and soccer goals to coloring sheets and table-top games.
The event will take place at Forest Heights Baptist Church (1155 Oglethorpe Ave.) from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and will be immediately followed (at 1 p.m.) with a reading by Festival co-founder and children’s author, Bart King. In addition to the Pop-up Park activities, the church’s new playground will be open and available to kids, plus we’ll block off a designated portion of the parking lot for riding bikes, scooters and the like. (Please bring and use helmets.)
If you’re wondering what to do with kids after the conclusion of the BikeAthens Rally or Blueberry Hill Fun Run, this is the answer!
What about Lunch?!
The Wing Kingh food truck will be on site during the event, or you can bring your own picnic. The nearby shade trees should be perfect for spreading blankets and relaxing within short distance of the Pop-up Park and other activities.
